At the Grand Canyon campground the students have already set up camp, had dinner and walked a
quarter mile to the south rim of the canyon. They get here while it's still light and stay till
twilight. You can't actually see the canyon until you reach the rim. This is how it
looks. I was struck with awe the firs time I saw it and it's still impressive seeing it again.

It is twilight now. The students sat and watched the canyon until the sun set.
Your first look at the canyon is awesome. A mile deep gorge lays almost at your feet and the sun is
setting. This is a very special way to enjoy your first view of the Grand Canyon. One year a man
setup his portable amplifier and played till dark. Listen and you can hear him play.....

Here are some of the students awaiting sunset at the Grand Canyon rim. That's Ms. Jaclyn
Kordell taking a picture of them. Jaclyn volunteered as an adult chaperone for her first time
on this trek 2009. I hope she likes this kind of work and volunteers again. She's very
good with the students. The trek needs a steady influx of young people like Jaclyn.
Much as I'd like to I can't do this forever.

These kids are exploring the inside of the tower at Desert View. Everything in the
tower is mysterious and lots of fun. It has three levels inside. Tonight the students
are going to see an Imax movie of the Grand Canyon. The movie is a history of the canyon and the
people who lived there and those that explored it.

These students are buying ice cream at the store at Desert View. Its not too hot today
but the ice cream is so good. They all want to taste their friends flavor. The ice cream
store made good sales today thanks to these students from our gang of 80.

This is the second day of the trek. We are at the Grand Canyon National Park and returning from
seeing the canyon. The students are allowed to call home for the first time. Last night
we slept in a cozy motel room. To night we sleep on the ground under a plastic tube tent.
The trek is full of good news and bad news.
