Preparations for the Trek

Updated 2009

. The students are taken on a 'Test Hike' about a month before the trek to insure that they are physically able to do it.   The backpacking part of this trip is almost a 12 miles with the steep part only 1.5 miles but, it's not a walk in the park.   The test hike is only 8 miles.   Students wear their hiking boots and carry day packs with books to simulate the real thing.   Most seventh grade students can do the 12 mile trek.   The test hike identifies those that can't make it.

. On the day before the Trek parents line up to check in their son's/daughter's backpack.   They also find out exactly what their student needs to bring tomorrow.   It's really exciting now because the Trek starts tomorrow morning, early.   For most students the Trek is unlike anything they have ever done.   This is something most students will do without their parents near by.   The students are well supervised by teachers and adult volunteers.   Here Mr. Keith Kadera is inspecting a student's backpack.

. Here Mrs. Candy Burns is making name tags to put on student backpacks and handing out T-shirts with the Trek Logo.   See Trek Logo in the banner above.).   The name tags make it easier to get a backpack back to the owner when unloading from the truck.   The students will not see their backpacks until the second day of the trek, when we arrive at the Grand Canyon campground.   The students need to pack a lunch and one change of clothes and a tooth brush and a swim suit in a duffle bag to take on the bus the first day of the trek.

. Mr. Don Dias and Mr. Phil Puccinelli are loading backpacks on the truck.   This is a very busy day for us but a lot of fun.   The truck is also loaded with food and cook ware. All of us who are going on the trek know that tomorrow it starts.   We are all excited and ready to do this another year.

. Mrs. Malena Jauregui is helping this man and his son check in the backpack.   A name tag will be put on the backpack and the sleeping bag before it's loaded on the truck.
