Camping at the canyon rim

Updated 2009

. Arriving at the Grand Canyon National park campground we unload the backpacks.   This is what it looks like just before we set up the tube tents and the cooking area.   Many students are already familiar with this kind of camping, but for some even this is a first.   Camping here is not rough at all.   There are nice restrooms near camp and a shopping center is near by.

. Next we setup the tube tents.   Plastic ground covers are used underneath the tents and all the student's belongings are placed inside.   This will be home for two nights.   There are many fun things to do here, but there are chores too.   Hear the sound of birds and other noises at the canyon campground. .........MP3 sound 24K

. These students are waking up the next day.   They have sweat shirts on because it gets cold here at night.   The altitude here is 7000 feet above sea level.   Hear Mr. Mike Fernandez tell the students what time to wake up tomorrow morning. ........MP3 sound 7K

. Mrs. Lupita Montijo is showing the students how to wash pots and pans using the National Park facilities.   At the Grand Canyon campground the faucet's action surprises you with its abruptness the first time you use it.
See a movie showing Mrs.Karla Francis making sure students learn how to use these faucets so they don't leave the water running. .......Movie with sound 1.6mb (recommend high speed internet access)

. Park rangers came to give us a lecture on the geology and ecology of this area.   They are particularly proud of their success in reintroducing the California Condor to this region.   The reintroduction of the California Condor into the wild has been more successful here than in California.   They explain this condor program to some detail.

. After dark we roasted marshmellows then Mr. Peter Clifford leads us in songs.   This year the students like to sing a lot.   Tomorrow the students will have time off to visit the shopping areas here.
