The Supai Village

Updated 2011

. Just before arriving at the village of  Supai we pass two stone rock formations shown here (2004).   They are known as the 'Weegleeva' by the Havasupai natives and are part of our trek's logo printed on the T-shirts given to each student.   See the logo above.

. These three students just past the center of Supai village and are heading for the restaurant (2008).   There are only 2 miles left in the hike til we get to the Havasu campgrounds, but here we stop for a break.   These hikers look in great shape after 8 mles, some of the others including me, are exhausted by this point.   I look forward to this break every year.   The student in the middle volunteered to carry a cook pot to the campground.

. This is the center of the village Supai (2008).   The building on your right is a restaurant where we stop for a break from the hike.   Our leader gets permission tags to allow entry to the campgrounds at another place in Supai.   The tags are put on the backpacks here before hiking the rest of the way to the campground.

. The students here have arrived at thr restaurant in Supai and dumped their backpacks along side (2004).   Inside they can buy things found in a soda fountain sandwiches Sodas etc..   When you take off your backpack, after carrying it for so long, you get thr sensation of falling forward for a while.   This soon goes away with a litle rest.   Then after the break it's very hard to put the backpack on again to continue hiking for another two miles in mostly sand.

. The mailbox at the Supai village store is mounted a bit high for some of us.   I don't know how the women of the village reach it.   They are all pretty short.   Here Mr. Steve Slattery helps Mrs. Lupita Montijo mail some post cards to her daughters along with student post cards.   A letter mailed here will receive a cancellation mark showing it was carried by 'Mule Train Mail' part of the way.   The mail is carried from here to 'Hilltop' by the last remnant of the USA Pony Express.   We encouraged the students to write post cards home, to be mailed here so their parents will get it with this special cancellation mark.
