In 2009 after leaving the Grand Canyon National Park
we were supposed to stop in the small town of Camron Arizona for lunch.
We had eaten breakfast late and not very hungry and their were no rest facilities
in Camron.
The decision was made not to stop and continue to Page Arizona.
We got to Page 3 hours on the road and the KOA campground at Page was not suitable so we surprised
a motel in Page with 100 customers they were not expecting. The motel worked with us
to assign the rooms as soon as possible but the students needed a rest stop now.
We took them to a Walmart parking lot where we took them five girls and five boys at a time into
the Walmart store to use their facilities.
The other students waited near the buses for their turn. Here the students started
playing Pattie-Cake to pass the time. We did eventually get the rooms assigned and
the students got to swim in the motel pool.

In 2008 one of the buses burst a coolant hose and started
to over heat about half way to Williams AZ from Kingman. I was on this bus with
Mr. Dan Guadalupe and Mrs Lupita Montijo. When this type of bus over heats it
deactivates the throttle and begins slowly decelerating, giving the bus driver time to move
over to the right shoulder. We did that and when the engine cooled down we restarted
it and moved to an off ramp a few hundred yards up the road.
This was a safer place to be.
Without the engine running the bus gets very stuffy
with so many people. Mr. Dan Guadalupe watches over a group of six students we
rotated out to get fresh air. We kept rotating six students at a time until the
Kingman school district sent a school bus to get us to the Grand Canyon campground.
While we camped the broken bus was fixed in time to continue our trek.
The bus drivers did a great job. We also give thanks to the Kingman AZ school
district for lending us their bus.

In 2008, when we got to the rest stop at Boron CA, the wind
was so fierce (approx. 35 mph) we could not make the sandwiches out there.
We put a table inside the truck and three of us made sandwiches inside.
The rest of us took refuge in the lee of the truck, only three could fit inside to do
the work. That is a first timer, Mrs. Malena Jauregui taking pictures.
She shouts 'Hurry up' to the workers. That's when I knew she was one of us
now. You see we are all chiefs on this trek.
There is no one to delegate to except the NewBees. That is our leader inside the
truck making sandwiches for the students.
Normally all the adults would help make sandwiches and the students would eat on the
grass. This time the students got their lunch and returned to the bus to eat.

In 2002 Mr. Bill Torsch inspects the trailer tires after
returning to Kingman from the Grand Canyon National Park. He had noticed the van
pulling the trailer was going slower than normal on this leg.
The tire is completely gone except for the side walls. The three tires left were
supporting the load of all the backpacks. I've seen pieces of tire on the road while
traveling but this is the first time I see what is left of the tire.
Bill got the tire replaced in Kingman AZ.

This is the hotel in Barstow, California.
The year is 2001, notice the pool. When we made the reservation no mention was made
that their pool was being repaired. This is sad, but mostly for the students who after
riding in the bus all day could not go swimming. They probably took long showers before
dinner.
