John was the assistant to the leader Ken W. sometime before 1986. John succeeded Ken W. as leader of the Trek but I'm not sure what year. Before 1980 only the strongest students were taken to the bottom of the Grand Canyon for the back packing type of hiking. In 1980 this changed, and all the students were taken from this KOA campground to the Havasupi campground. This backpacking hike was about 12 miles, but all students could do this hike.
