John and Coleen are leading the 80 students hiking down to the village of Supai. At this point in the hike they have reached the end of the switch-backs. The switch-backs are the first 1 1/2 miles of the hike (steep part). From this point the trail is not so steep. It's perfect because all eighty students can make it, though some have more trouble than others. John is now the leader of this trek but when exactly he took over from Ken W. I don't know.
